The birth control pill is 99% effective when taken each day at the same time. But it’s easy to miss a dose, so for most users, efficacy drops to 91%—which means nearly 1 million U.S. women a year have unplanned pregnancies, despite being on the pill. The health-tech company Emme has developed a Bluetooth-connected smart case ($99) that works with more than 100 different brands of birth control pills. The case syncs with an app that increases accountability by sending custom reminders to take the pill, follows up if users don’t remove a pill from the case, offers pill delivery, and lets users track their cycle and mood. Emme reported an 80% reduction in missed pills among its customers during beta testing.
